2023. The first year that feels like not just a continuation of 2020, to be honest. I didn't set any big goals or resolutions, but I do have a lot of plans. Here's some fun stuff I'm working on: - Laravel Valet v4
I've been busting my butt the last few months to update Laravel Valet to be easier to maintain, extend, and debug. There are a few new features on the way, but most of my work there has been about making it more stable and more easy to fix if it breaks. It's a ton of fun, and I love living in the code for a while. - New Role
In the early days at Tighten I was mainly the CTO who did some marketing, some people ops, a bit of project management, and a bit of business development. Now I'm also COO, overseeing most of the systems and processes of the company and its operation and finances. I'm still involved in all the same things as before, but it's at a higher level, and it's more stuff. I like it, but it's definitely exercising new skills. - Public Teaching
One of the foundations of my work in the community and at Tighten in the early days was public education. Podcasting, blogging, videos, tweets, streaming. Writing a book and the pandemic slowed these down a lot, but I'm picking them back up in 2023, releasing YouTube videos regularly and restarting the Laravel Podcast and sharing more on Twitter and Mastodon.
There's more, I'm sure. But this is what I'm excited about right now. I don't have anything deep to say! I'm just ready
to get back to it! I hope your 2023 is going well and you're hopeful and excited for the future.
What Else? Popular Tweets - I just discovered the same actor played: - General Hux in Star Wars - The dude in Ex machina - Bill Weasley in the Harry Potter movies It's probably clear to everyone else but I just kept seeing him in things and thinking "that guy is kinda familiar". Domhnall Gleason (Tweet)
- Just because
someone has "senior" in front of their title, it doesn't actually guarantee anything about their seniority, level of experience, or competence. Each company adds those labels for different reasons. A senior at one company might be, no joke, an intern elsewhere. (Tweet)
- I should add: Just because someone *doesn't* have senior in their title, it doesn't mean they don't have anything meaningful or helpful to contribute, or that they shouldn't be honored and respected as meaningful contributors to a
project. Basically: Labels are near-meaningless (Tweet)
- I used to regularly record "Ask Matt" videos, sort of a one-video-at-a-time AMA. Most had to do with running a company, engineering leadership, or programming. I'm going to start again. What would you like me to make a video about? Here are the oldies: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgJIx0-UaB9TyRNYezMsPUGSPaSSP8Ljb (Tweet)
- .@TightenCo's "Collect" package, which at one point was the easiest way to use@laravelphp's Collections in standalone apps, will not be receiving updates for versions 10+. This is the end of a graceful deprecation process we began when Illuminate/Collections split. A good thing! (Tweet)
- A few exciting things in @laravelphp Valet v4: - Pick Expose or Ngrok as your share tool - Modernized codebase (PHP 8+) but you can still serve sites on PHP 7.1+, and even set your system PHP to 7.4 if needed - Better debugging with `valet status` - Tested AF, more stable (Tweet)
- There are some great public-facing features, but much of the
work in v4 is to make it easier to maintain, easier to extend, easier to change. There are more tests, more powerful tools for Valet drivers to build on, more integrations and hooks for other tools to connect to. (Tweet)
That's it for now! Until next time... Your friend,
Matt Stauffer
