The summer of COVID is over, and we've got some new goodies!

Hey, friend!

The summer is over. School has started. If you're like me, you have kids and they're in virtual school and you spend half of your week being an unexpected, inexperienced homeschool teacher.

But! The kids are alive! So am I! So are you! So let's celebrate that and see what other fun stuff has been going on lately.

A short note on grace

This summer has been a hard season for me, not even considering COVID. When I've found myself wanting to publicly say "this has been a tough season for me," I have always stopped myself. This has been a tough season for everyone, right? Seems kinda inconsiderate to tweet that as if you're the only one.

Some times I respond to myself negatively. "Matt, you shouldn't complain, when some people have it so much worse!" Other times I respond positively. "Everyone's going through a hard time right now. It's not just you. We'll understand each other's difficulty."

Regardless of my feelings in that moment, I've found that the thing I need more than anything else right now is grace. I need grace for myself when I want to complain that it's perfectly OK for me to be having a hard time. I need grace for everyone around me when they're having a hard-ass time as well. I need grace from the humans in my life--for them to consider everything I'm experiencing as they evaluate whether I've done "enough." I need to extend the same to them.

So, simple message this time around: Give yourself grace. Give others grace. And expect and demand grace from others.

A few quick updates:

Takeout

At Laracon this year, Jose Soto and I introduced a package we built called Takeout, which is a command-line tool to easily spin up simple Docker containers for your local development environment dependencies like MySQL and Redis.

Onramp

Onramp is officially launched! We still have a long list of content to add and features to tweak, but it's ready for public consumption, a year after I announced it!

Laravel/Laracon Sponsorship

After a friend gifted me the domain laravelscholarship.com I've been itching to find a way to use it. This year, when we decided to give away thousands of dollars of tickets to Laracon, we realized we could use that domain to do it, and we were able to work together with generous folks in the community to give away 298 tickets.
